Carolina Panthers fans can soon join in the hottest craze among collectors when NationsBank and the Carolina Panthers introduce a new stored value card.
Called FANtastic Plastic, it is a cash card that “stores” money on a computer chip and is designed as an alternative to cash purchases.

“NationsBank, as the Official Bank of the Panthers, is excited to bring fans FANtastic Plastic — an alternative to cash,” said Eileen M. Friars, president of NationsBank Card Services. “The card is easy and convenient to use. It also makes a great keepsake for the first season in our new stadium.”

Ericsson Stadium will be equipped with FANtastic Plastic for food, beverage and merchandise purchases. The card also can be used at the Panthers Team Store. Fans can use the cards anywhere they see the FANCash symbol.

“Our central focus in building this facility has been to make everything as convenient as possible for our fans and we think they will find the stored value card useful,” said Director of Stadium Operations Jon Richardson. “In addition, FANtastic Plastic offers fans a collectible Panthers souvenir for inaugural season at Ericsson Stadium.”

The limited-edition cards will be sold in denominations of $20, $50 and $100. The cards can be used throughout the Panthers ’96-’97 home game season. When the card’s cash value is depleted, it can be kept as a collectible trading card.

Five card designs will be offered this season. They include four inaugural stadium cards which feature Panthers players Greg Kragen, Lamar Lathon, Kerry Collins and Sir Purr, the team’s mascot.

The four cards are collectible alone, but they become highly collectible when they are arranged together. The back of the cards form the solution to a puzzle which feature Ericsson Stadium. They will be available starting with the first regular season game.

The fifth card features a Carolina Panthers helmet against a backdrop of enthusiastic Panther fans. It will be on sale at NationsBank banking centers in Charlotte beginning July 22.

Fans who don’t have access to banking centers in Charlotte can order FANtastic Plastic by mail or by phoning 1-800-689-0229 to have the cards shipped directly to them before attending the games.

PSL “Permanent Seat License) holders can purchase and use the cards at Ericsson Stadium and the Panthers Team Store beginning July 27, the Panthers’ PSL Appreciation Day. Beginning August 3, the first preseason game, FANtastic Plastic will be available for all fans to use in the stadium and Panthers Team Store.

NationsBank is working with Diebold, Incorporated, based in Canton, OH, to supply and install the card terminals, as well as set up the settlement process. More than 200 Diebold terminals will accept FANtastic Plastic for food, beverages and Panthers merchandise in the stadium and the Panthers Team Store.

Schlumberger Smart Cards & Systems, an international company with U.S. headquarters in Chesapeake, VA, will supply the cards. Volume Services, Inc., based in Spartanburg, SC, is the exclusive provider of food services and team merchandise.

“FANtastic Plastic is an example of the opportunities we see for our stored value products following the Olympics,” said Friars. “The Olympics gives us the groundwork that is needed to explore this technology.”

NationsBank recently announced its plans to sell NationsBank Visa Cash, also a stored value product, at the 1996 Olympic Games. As the Official Bank of the Olympic Games, NationsBank is the only bank that can sell the card within the Olympic Stadium and all other Olympic venues.

NationsBank is the fifth-largest banking company in the country with more than $194 billion in assets and banking centers in nine states and the District of Columbia.
