If you live in California, you may soon see Amazon.com advertised on your ATM screen. Wells Fargo, the diversified financial services company, is launching an innovative marketing concept through its Wells Fargo Media Express ATM Network. This new program places advertisements on the Welcome, Transaction Processing, and Thank You screens of more than 340 ATMs in San Francisco, San Jose, Marin, San Mateo, Contra Costa and Alameda counties in California. AT&T is among other businesses that will join this advertising campaign in Spring 99.
State-of-the-art technology enables faster transaction service, so the advertisements will not lengthen the transaction time. An added attraction is that Wells Fargo will be donating screen space to community organizations in the areas where the ATMs are located. In addition to the on-screen advertisements, the back of each ATM transaction receipt will be pre-printed with advertisements and special offers.
The first special offer will be from Amazon.com, who will give a $10 discount on any Amazon.com purchase to customers who enroll for Wells Fargo Online Banking. Later, AT&T will be offering discounted Internet access.
This isnt the first innovation for Wells Fargo. In 1994, they were the first major bank to dispense U.S. postage stamps through its ATMs. Then, in 1996 they offered discounted ski lift tickets atfour major Lake Tahoe ski resorts to its Northern California ATM customers. The program covered over 550 ATMs and included discounted ski and snowboard lesson packages.
