American Express Platinum and Gold cardmembers now have even more incentive to travel in Europe. In response to their cardmembers requests for a premium class flight experience, American Express has responded with the new European Airline Privileges program.
Beginning in April 1999 qualified cardmembers can take advantage of the new European Airline Privileges program, entitling them to buy two business class tickets for the price of one business class full-fare ticket. The program, the latest American Express travel initiative, is initially being launched in Italy and the United Kingdom, with airline partners Lufthansa, Alitalia, Air France, Aer Lingus and Sabena.
Over 300,000 Platinum and Gold cardmembers in the UK and Italy will soon receive notification of the program through direct mail, statement inserts and joint offer mailings. During the year the program will expand to other markets. The European Airline Privileges program is a natural follow-up to the International Airline Program launched by American Express across Europe in 1996, and a similar program launched in the U.S. in 1993. The U.S. program enabled Platinum cardmembers to receive full-fare unrestricted companion tickets or upgrades whenever they traveled on selected international airlines within certain time frames.
