American dads prefer new clothes for Father’s Day rather than event tickets. According to a poll conducted by MasterCard last month, family members expect to spend on average $51.90 per gift for fathers this weekend. Of fathers polled, 68% indicated that they use the Internet, with 35% indicating that they go online on a daily basis. Nearly half the fathers surveyed (47%) said they have at some point shopped online, including 32% of fathers age 55 and over. Fathers age 18-34 shopped online the most, with 61% indicating they have shopped online. The survey revealed that clothing and accessories is the top item on fathers’ gift lists (24%). The second most popular gift requested by fathers is music and books (22%), followed by sports and fitness equipment (19%). Participants of the survey were asked which TV dad most epitomizes the ideal father figure and Cliff Huxtable from “The Cosby Show” came in at number one with 39% of respondents naming him the ideal father figure. Coming in behind Cliff Huxtable were Howard Cunningham from “Happy Days” (17%) and Ward Cleaver from “Leave It To Beaver” (15% percent). Some “priceless” gifts children would most like for their fathers this Father’s Day include: “A clean bill of health” 51%; “Happiness” 21%; and “Peace of mind” 16%.
