Gas Credit Cards

You can slice 5% to 10% off the prices at the gas pump by using a special VISA or MasterCard, but hurry as some of these deals end soon. The “Chase Freedom Card,” the “MBNA/AAA Platinum Plus Diamond Advantage VISA,” and the “Shell MasterCard from Citi” carry a lot of octane in the wake of stiff competition in the credit card business. In January, Citibank took over the “Shell MasterCard” program that was formerly run by Chase. As a result, the new “Shell MasterCard from Citi” is doubling the card’s regular 5% rebate on Shell gas purchases as part of an introductory program for those that apply for the new card by March 31st. New cardholders will receive a 10% rebate on each Shell gasoline purchase made within the first 60 days of the card’s activation. Thereafter the rebate reverts back to a 5% rebate on Shell gasoline purchases, and 1% on all other retail purchases wherever the card is used. All rebates are applied as credits toward future Shell gasoline purchases. MBNA’s “AAA Platinum Plus Diamond Advantage VISA” offers 5% rebate on all gas purchases. However, MBNA limits the rebate to $3 per day or $60 in daily gasoline purchases. The MBNA card also offers 1% discount on all travel purchases. The new “Chase Freedom Card” offers an automatic 3% rebate on all gasoline purchases, regardless of the brand, and a 1% rebate on all other purchases. For a 90-day introductory period, the new “Chase Freedom” card offers a 6% rebate on all gasoline purchases. The rebate is immediately credited to the next month’s statement and is able to be used toward any future purchases. There are no requirements to accumulate points or use rebates toward gas.
