Unit PricingThe biggest consumer tool for food shopping is unit pricing. It is also an effective tool for buying anything else. It is widely considered to be the cornerstone of consumer protection including organizations like our good friends at the National Consumers League.

Unit pricing provides cost per pound, quart, liter, or another unit of weight or volume of a food package. With unit prices, consumers can compare the cost of food packaged in different sized containers or across different brands.

While most major retailers offer unit pricing on in-store products as it is required in 19 states and the District of Columbia, six retailers have agreed to expand unit pricing to their online products.

The six retailers include Costco, Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, Drugstore.com, and FreshDirect. Each will implement online unit pricing between the end of this year and March 2015.

With Walmart, the 800 pound gorilla of retail, leading the pack, you can be sure the practice will spread quickly.
