Consumer Payment Card News

RCA MasterCard

Thomson Consumer Electronics and MBNA joined together yesterday to issue the ‘RCA MasterCard’, which could become the largest cobranded program to be launched this year. Thomson, owner of the ‘RCA’ brand, has created a ‘Rewards Program’ that offers cardholders a point for each net dollar charged redeemable for RCA consumer electronics product rebates. Once 2,500 points have been accumulated, the cardholder will be automatically sent a mail-in rebate coupon worth $25. Cardholders may then purchase RCA products, minimum $100, at any RCA dealer and submit the rebate coupon for payment. Multiple coupons can be redeemed at the same time and the coupons are good for three years. Card pricing is: no annual fee; 5.9% six-month intro rate (applicable to purchases, cash advances and balance transfers) and prime +9.9% long term rate. The program also offers a sign-up bonus, monthly sweepstakes and a partnership with U.S. Satellite Broadcasting. This program offers significant growth potential for MBNA as it taps into RCA’s 23 million consumer customer database. The program will kickoff this ‘Easter’ weekend with a high profile promotion in conjunction with the NCAA Final Four and the ‘Fan Jam’ underway at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

The leading brand in consumer electronics today launches an all-new program to enhance the shopping experience for home entertainment enthusiasts — the introduction of the RCA MasterCard.

“In keeping with consumers’ desire to expand their home entertainment options,” said Thomson Consumer Electronics’ James A. Gatman, Vice President – Marketing, “the RCA MasterCard — in addition to offering the advantages of general use credit cards — is designed to enable cardholders to earn discounts on RCA consumer electronics products.”

The specially designed RCA MasterCard, with RCA canine mascots Nipper and Chipper pictured on a star-lit, high-tech background, features some innovative advantages — including no annual fee, low introductory annual percentage rate, and the exclusive RCA Rewards Program. By making purchases with the RCA MasterCard, cardholders will earn RCA Reward Points which can be redeemed for discounts on RCA consumer electronics products purchased at any RCA dealer.

Interested consumers can learn more about the RCA MasterCard — or apply for one — by calling toll free 1-800-RCA-CARD (1-800-722-2273).

In addition to the RCA Rewards Program, a monthly sweepstakes will offer cardholders the opportunity to win an RCA brand consumer electronics product such as an RCA 32-inch (diagonal) color TV.

Cardholders will earn a point for each dollar (net transaction) charged on the card. Once 2,500 points have been accumulated, the cardholder will be automatically sent a mail-in rebate coupon worth $25. Cardholders then can purchase an RCA consumer electronics product (minimum purchase $100) at any RCA dealer, send in the coupon with a copy of the sales receipt and the warranty registration card to the RCA Redemption Center, and they will receive a check via return mail.

Multiple coupons can be redeemed at the same time, and each coupon is good for three years, so cardholders can save the coupons and redeem them at their leisure. This flexibility enables the cardholders to time their use of the coupon to take advantage of locally advertised dealer sales or replacement needs, or to purchase newly available products as they reach retail sales floors — such as the RCA DVD player.

“In addition, as the RCA MasterCard program matures,” said Larry Hamberg, Manager, Direct Sales – Administration, “RCA reward coupons may be redeemed for other select entertainment values, and cardholders may receive additional benefits which will be announced from time to time. For example, we are pleased to announce that cardholders will be able to use their RCA reward coupons to pay for DSS programming provided by U.S. Satellite Broadcasting (USSB).”

The RCA MasterCard is available exclusively through MBNA America Bank, N.A., the world’s second largest credit card lender.

As noted credit card expert Robert B. McKinley, president of RAM Research Group, publisher of CardTrak and CardFlash, said, “It’s refreshing to see two industry leaders, RCA and MBNA, come together to create a new, high-value card product with such broad appeal.”

“As the demand for home entertainment technology increases, MasterCard payment products will meet the consumer’s need for convenience anytime, anywhere,” said Beth Horowitz, MasterCard Vice President.

MasterCard International, a payments company with one of the world’s most recognized brands, is dedicated to helping more than 23,000 financial institutions around the world offer consumers a variety of payment options.
