Card Balances by Household

Bank credit card balances per U.S. household hit $4,260 at the end of 1996 according to the latest issue of Bankcard Barometer. The data are based on total card balances of $404.7 billion and 95 million gross U.S. households. The average household figure approaches $5,200 when spread among a total of 78 million creditworthy households. The states with the largest share edged up only 10%.
