Federated Department Stores announced Monday a new national customer rewards program called Family of Cards. The announcement follows three years of prototype development. Family of Cards is a multi-tiered program offering complimentary gift wrap, basic alterations, free shipping coupons, private discount shopping nights and a quarterly newsletter. Federated will also launch a co-branded credit card, which offers three percent rewards on purchases from Federated stores and one percent on VISA purchases elsewhere, both redeemable in merchandise gift certificates.

Federated Department Stores, Inc. announced today that it is introducing a new national customer rewards program called “Family of Cards,” which will recognize and reward its most loyal customers across the country. After three years of prototype development, Federated is launching the program across its divisions as a way to build stronger relationships with its key credit card customers.

Family of Cards is a multi-tiered program primarily developed and managed by Federated’s Financial and Credit Services (FACS) division. At each level, the benefits to the customer increase, including complimentary gift wrap and basic alternations, free shipping coupons, private discount shopping nights and a quarterly newsletter. Some customers also will be offered Federated’s co-branded credit card, which offers three percent rewards on purchases from Federated stores and one percent on VISA purchases elsewhere, both redeemable in merchandise gift certificates. The more often customers use their proprietary charge accounts, the more value and rewards the customers can earn in return.

Federated divisions will begin rolling out the Family of Cards program this month, with all participating stores — Bloomingdale’s, The Bon Marche, Burdines, Goldsmith’s, Lazarus, Macy’s and Rich’s — slated to have the program in place by April 1998.

Federated, with corporate offices in Cincinnati and New York, is one of the nation’s leading department store retailers, with annual sales of more than $15 billion. Federated currently operates more than 400 department stores and more than 150 specialty stores in 36 states.
