Consumer Payment Card News

One Million Served

Mark Clavin of Castleton, NY became the one millionth customer of Mobil Corporation’s ‘Speedpass’ program. ‘Speedpass’ enables customers to drive up, fill up, and automatically charge their fuel purchases to a designated credit card, without opening their wallets or purses. Mobil recently added a “car tag” transponder option to the program. The system also uses a “key chain tag” transponder. Mobil said Friday that ‘Speedpass’ usage patterns have indicated increased purchases per customer.

Mobil Corporation announced Friday its one millionth Speedpass customer, celebrating the success of its exclusive technology that allows customers to drive up and fill up without ever opening wallets or purses for credit cards or cash.

What was good news for Mark Clavin of Castleton, NY, the one millionth customer was even better news for Mobil Corporation which reports that early Speedpass usage patterns indicate increased purchases per customer.

“Our research shows us that customers are looking for the fastest and easiest way to get in and out of the service station,” reports Joe Giordano, Acting Pricing and Technology Manager of Mobil Corporation. “Motorists enrolled in the Mobil Speedpass program use a miniature electronic device attached to their key chain or affixed to their rear window. It’s the most convenient way to get gas so you have more time for more important things in your life.”

Similar to state-of-the-art electronic payment technology used to reduce waiting time at highway tollbooths, Speedpass is an exclusive technology available only at Mobil that employs radio frequency signals. The electronic system located in the pump “talks” (communicates) with miniature transponder devices located in the car tag or key tag. Together, these electronic devices provide quick, simple access to gasoline by automatically charging fuel purchases to a designated credit card. Customers can designate any of the wide range of credit cards that Mobil accepts when they enroll in the Speedpass program.

Drivers must enroll to acquire a Speedpass. There are several ways to enroll: 1) By phoning (800) 459-2266; 2) Through the Mobil Speedpass internet Webster at; 3) By completing an enrollment form available at any participating

Mobil service station. There is no cost to consumers for the Speedpass transponder and no service charge for using the new technology to fill up.

Mobil is the leading global oil, natural gas and petrochemical company.
