Scary Halloween Figures

Ghosts, ghouls and goblins will cost the American consumer over $5 billion this year. The Halloween Association (THA) reports that we will spend $1.76 billion on candy, $1-$1.5 billion on costumes, and $2.5 billion on other related items. Now thats scary.

Adult participation in Halloween celebrations has dramatically fueled the growth of the costume category in recent years. According to the 2nd annual Halloween Survey, conducted by the National Retail Federation, 82% of children plan to dress up this year and 73% of adults will participate in some kind of Halloween activity. Adult involvement in Halloween celebrations has increased to the point where 45% of all those responding to the survey reported that they will celebrate Halloween on a scale equal to or greater than last New Years Eve.

The lions share of that other category includes Halloween décor light strings, wind socks, flags, pumpkins, corn shocks, hay bales, pumpkin-colored leaf bags, and much more. Items that are probably hidden from these tallies include fabric used to make costumes, special home lighting, and haunted attractions.

THA continues to collect and disseminate information regarding the celebration of Halloween. They can be reached through their web site (, via email at, by phone at 410-418-4800, by fax at 410-418-4805, or by writing THA, 3525 Ellicott Mills Drive, Suite N, Ellicott City, MD 21043-4547.
