Debit Float

Most debit cards do not offer a float like credit cards do, but this is about to change as Ohio-based Charter One Financial launches a delayed-debit MasterCard. The new SmartBusiness OneCard gives Charter One small business customers the option of having their funds debited monthly or semimonthly. Charter One customers can also monitor their SmartBusiness OneCard transactions at the bank’s Web site. While the delayed-debit card postpones disbursements for purchases, a calculation on Charter One’s Web site allows customers to view what their balances would be if charges were applied on the day of each transaction. The new SmartBusiness OneCard also features a card made from a translucent material. The card is free with a Charter One business checking account. Charter One offers a SmartBusiness Checking I account which offers 100 free monthly transactions and requires a $12 monthly fee for average daily balances below $2,500. The SmartBusiness Checking II offers up to 400 free monthly transactions for a $25 monthly fee for average daily balances under $10,000. Charter One Financial is currently converting from a thrift to a national bank this month. The bank has 456 branch locations in Ohio, Michigan, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Vermont.
