Holiday sales are being spiked this week by male shoppers, the perennial last minute shoppers. A new survey found that at the start of this week nearly one in five men had yet to begin their holiday shopping. Another poll found that 24% of shoppers will not finish until December 23rd or later, 10% will push it to “Christmas Eve” and 5% of shoppers won’t finish up their holiday shopping until after December 25th. According to NRF’s “2007 Holiday Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey,” conducted by BIGreseach, also found that less than a third of consumers have already purchased a gift card. According to the survey, department stores are expected to be the destination of choice the week before Christmas, as 42% of shoppers plan to visit those stores to finish up holiday shopping. Consumer Reports said its poll found that as consumers reach for their wallets to purchase holiday gifts, nearly eight in 10 will pay in cash, followed by credit (45%) and debit cards (40%). According to MasterCard Canada research, with less than one week until Christmas, 19% of Canadians may not have even started their holiday shopping and often wait until “Christmas Eve” to buy their gifts.
