A prepaid debit MasterCard that links up to Social Security payments and other federal benefits is currently being introduced in 10 states, and will be rolled-out nationwide this summer. The new “Direct Express Debit MasterCard” is being issued by Dallas-based Comerica Bank on behalf of the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Financial Management Service. About four million Social Security and SSI recipients do not have bank accounts while 80% of these recipients use direct deposit. People currently receiving Social Security or Supplemental Security Income checks in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Texas have already received information about the card.
