Average credit card debt slipped a bit a mid-year, hovering at $5700. Alaska remains the state with the highest average credit card debt while Iowa remains the lowest. According to TransUnion average credit card debt declined to $5,719 as of June 30th, compared to $5,776 at the end of March and $5,621 for June 30th of last year. The highest average debt remains in Alaska, Tennessee and Nevada and the lowest average credit card debt was found in Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota. The highest state average credit card debt was Alaska at $7,665, followed by Tennessee at $7,054 and Nevada at $6,517. The lowest average credit card debt was found in Iowa at $4,247, followed by North Dakota at $4,417 and South Dakota at $4,633. The steepest increases in average credit card debt over the previous quarter occurred in the District of Columbia (+6.3%, Tennessee (+2.7%) and Alaska (+2.5%. Hawaii experienced the largest drop in average credit card debt (-2.7%), followed by the Utah (-2.6%) and Nevada (-2.4%).
