Discover is pulling the plug on one of its core benefits. Effective February 6, 2014, Discover will discontinue offering its Secure Online Account Numbers benefit and will totally deactivate the service for existing cardholders on March 15, 2014.
Discover says “the technology on which secure online account numbers are based is no longer available to Discover.” Discover tried to pull the plug on Secure Online Account Numbers more than two years ago but reinstated the benefit shortly afterward following cardholder protests.
With Discover’s Secure Online Account Numbers when you make a purchase with a merchant using a Secure Number, the number is assigned only to that particular merchant. Once a Secure Online Account Number is assigned, the merchant can use it for your future purchases with them, unless you specify otherwise.
Other bank credit card issuers currently offering a similar benefit include American Express, Citibank and Bank of America.
In an online statement Discover says “We recognize that Secure Online Account Numbers are popular, and sincerely regret this inconvenience. Please know that Discover has a robust security platform in place to help prevent fraudulent activity both in-store and online. Plus, Discover cardmembers are always protected by our $0 fraud liability guarantee, which means you are never liable for unauthorized charges on your account. The safety and security of our cardmembers remains a top priority and you can rest assured knowing you are protected from unauthorized charges on your account.”
