Midwest Credit Unions the Heartland of Credit Cards

Midwest Credit Unions Credit Cards

Midwest credit unions offer a balanced mix of points and cash-back for their credit card programs and 75% offer introductory rates ranging from 0% to 2.9% for the first six or twelve months. On the hole, credit unions in the Midwest states check off all the boxes when matched up to current credit card offerings from Chase, Capital One, Bank of America and Citibank.

While most have between 100,000 and 400,000 members, Chicago-based Alliant Credit Union, with 500,000 and $12 billion in assets, only offers three personal credit cards, while First Community Credit Union in Missouri, with 350,000 members, offers a full plate of seven personal credit cards and one business credit card.

Annual fees are non-existent among the Midwest credit union issuers. Moreover, more than half charge no balance transfer fees or no cash advance fees. Additionally, interest rates apply the same for purchases, balance transfers and cash advances (less than 20%). Wings Financial Credit Union in Minnesota goes a step further and assesses no foreign transaction fees.

Unlimited Rewards, Fee Free & Rock Bottom Rates

Wright-Patt Credit Union in Ohio offers an on-going rate as low as prime +3%. Landmark Credit Union in Wisconsin sweetens the pot with a $50 cash bonus for charging $1000 in the first 90 days, plus unlimited 1.5% cash-back. GreenState Credit Union in Iowa offers 5,000 points ($50 cash value) for charging $500 in the first two months.

Black Hills Federal Credit Union in South Dakota with about 75,000 members offers three personal credit cards and three business credit cards, along with fixed interest rates starting at 7.75%.

The twelve states in the Midwest credit card market include Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, South Dakota, and North Dakota, with a total population of 70 million.

Other U.S. Regions

Consistent with CardTrak.com’s 2019 credit card credit union surveys of the Southern, Mid-Atlantic, Pacific Coastal, Southwest, Rocky Mountain, New England regions, the credit unions in the Mid-West states, offer extremely competitive deals compared to the nation’s largest issuers. Unlimited cash-back, and little, if any, annual fees or nuisance fees. Furthermore, most credit unions offer strong introductory pricing plus the advantage of a local personal contact, says Robert McKinley, Senior Analyst for CardTrak, CardFlash and CardData.

Alliant Credit Union, based in Chicago with nearly 500,000 members, offers three personal credit cards. The most popular personal credit card is the Alliant Credit Union Visa Platinum Rewards credit card.

0% introductory rate for 12 months on purchases and balance transfers. (After the introductory period, a variable rate applies ranging from 14.99% to 24.99%. Balance transfer fee of 2% of the amount transferred,  $5 minimum.)

New cardholders earn 5,000 bonus points with qualifying spend. All Cardholders earn two reward points for every dollar spent.
Points can be redeemed for cash back, travel, gift cards, merchandise and more. You can earn additional points through exclusive online and in-store offers from top retailers.

The card earns 2 points for every $1 spent, double points for the first 90 days, and 10,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 within the first 90 days.

The Wings Member Rewards Visa Signature Card carries no annual fee, charges no balance transfer fee, ae well as no foreign transaction fee.

Missouri

The First Community Credit Union Visa Classic offers a fixed 15.90% APR on purchases, balance transfers and cash advances. There are no annual fees, balance transfer fees or cash advance fees. There is a $10 late fee.

The First Community Credit Union Visa Classic currently offers a special rate. Any balances for new purchases made between November 27th and December 2nd will accrue interest on the unpaid balance at the rate of 2.99% APR until June 9, 2020. Effective on the July 2020 billing cycle, the 15.90% APR applies.
