Affinity credit cards have reached the silver anniversary mark. In the fall of 1978, AAA launched the first “AAA VISA’ credit card, signing up 15,000 accounts in its first year. Since then, the card has grown to 3.3 million accounts with nearly $4 billion in outstanding balances. Since the launch of the AAA credit card program, the number of affinity card programs in the USA has topped 10,000. MBNA, the nation’s leading affinity card issuer, now issues the AAA card. The card recently added a 5% gasoline rebate feature and a rewards program. AAA provides more than 46 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotive-related services.
