Cardholders of the Discover card will soon be able to use their cards when travelling within Mexico. Discover, launched in 1985, is primarily a domestic card with acceptance at 4 million U.S merchants, and at some travel related merchants in Canada and the Caribbean. The expanded acceptance in Mexico is the result of a deal between Discover Financial Services and Citigroup’s Grupo Financiero Banamex. Initially, Banamex will activate merchants in Mexico’s tourist destinations and border crossings, and eventually throughout the country. Banamex currently provides card acceptance services for more than 20,000 merchants in Mexico. Banamex has a distribution network of more than 1,400 branches and 4,400 ATM’s located throughout Mexico.
